So with disable_dns_lookups = no you are doing lookups (double negative).
When I do an nslookup for midway.src.uchicago.edu from here, I get
non-existant host/domain. Looks like a dns problem.

Oh, if your search list in /etc/resolv.conf is just "search uchicago.edu",
not src.uchicago.edu, the machine is in the dns tables as
midway.uchicago.edu, not midway.src.uchicago.edu.
