Take a closer look at mine (I'll be glad to pass you a copy of it in
email, just ask).
It uses the Perl module File::Tail, and that module does some
amazing things to (a) tune the frequency with which it checks the
file, to adapt to the rate at which the logfile is being updated,
and (b) automatically detect when the logfile has been rotated and
switch to the new one.
My pop-before-smtp script has proven a fire-and-forget fix on our
email server, no maintenance required, and it doesn't get restarted
when the logfiles rotate.
