*sigh*
I agree that tinydns discussion is a bit off-topic, but discussion of a
good local caching DNS server to use is somewhat relevant to running large
mail servers. I too recommend dnscache for this purpose; I use it, it
works great, it's very reliable and consistent, it has considerably better
logging that the alternatives I've seen, it strikes me as considerably
more secure, and it's so much easier to set up than BIND that there really
isn't any comparison (mostly because it's trying to do considerably less).
Take that or leave it, it's my opinion, and I do think it's relevant to a
mailing list discussing mail systems (although this certainly isn't the
forum in which to belabor the point).
And, as an aside, can I make the non-specific comment that when technical
discussions devolve to "I know what I'm talking about and you don't," the
useful technical content in the discussion is very quickly drowned out and
destroyed? There really isn't ever a good time to say that. Similarly,
it doesn't do any good to accuse someone else of being biased, since it
just starts a flamewar about whether or not they're biased or whether they
have justification for being biased, etc. We're all smart people; I think
we can figure out for ourselves what people's motivations for saying
things might be.
If people *really* want to have these kinds of discussions, there are
plenty of advocacy groups on Usenet that thrive on them.
