Unfortunately sendmail does have a switch to disable the conversion to
lowercase. I was caught out by this when a package used at the office
required some of the accounts to have uppercase names. Mail sent to this
account needed to be forwarded elsewhere.

You are right. Most people wouldn't sensibly choose to use uppercase
names, but the option to allow it does have its uses in real situations.
