Subject: smtpd or no smtpd??

Hi all

I discovered an interesting riddle:
I have postfix configured as a null client on my workstation. smtpd is
commented out in the master.cf. telnet to port 25 of my machine confirms
that nothing is listening there. Also lsof -i -n and netstat -a confirm
this.

But when I send a mail with pine I get the following log entries:
Jun 26 17:50:40 dusty postfix-script: starting the Postfix mail system
Jun 26 17:50:41 dusty postfix/master[25818]: daemon started
Jun 26 17:52:40 dusty postfix/smtpd[25841]: connect from
localhost[127.0.0.1]
Jun 26 17:52:40 dusty
postfix/smtpd[25841]: DE5D27646C: client=localhost[127.0.0.1]
Jun 26 17:52:40 dusty postfix/smtpd[25841]: disconnect from
localhost[127.0.0.1]
Jun 26 17:52:41 dusty postfix/pickup[25819]: 0176FA95AB: uid=157
from=<tandresvis.ethz.ch>
[snip]

As you can see the master process is freshly started. And the I see smtpd
in there. Does anybody have an idea why? When I send a mail with the
sendmail binary I just see

Jun 27 08:45:29 dusty postfix/pickup[25898]: E845AA95AB: uid=0 from=<root>
Jun 27 08:45:29 dusty
postfix/cleanup[25920]: E845AA95AB: message-id=<20000627064529.E845AA95ABdusty.ergon.ch>
Jun 27 08:45:30 dusty
postfix/qmgr[25820]: E845AA95AB: from=<rootergon.ch>, size=263 (queue
active)
Jun 27 08:45:30 dusty
postfix/smtp[25922]: E845AA95AB: to=<andresergon.ch>,
relay=mahler.ergon.ch[193.72.196.199], delay=1, status=sent (250
Ok: queued as 1C8799018D)

No smtpd here as expected.

Anyone knows where this smtpd comes from?
The postfix version is 19990906-pl08.

Bye
Thomas
