There sort of -is- such a thing, and why I called it the 'naughty'
version.
Since RH included a package named 'gcc-2.96', I would say that there
-is- such a thing in existence, but that its usage (and expecting it
to work) would not be a wise thing, especially when the developers say,
basically, "wow, you got it to compile something? that's a bug since
it's not even supposed to get that far"
See http://www.redhat.com/products/software/linux/rhl7_standard.html,
which states:
Updated development toolchain with gcc 2.96, gdb 5.0, glibc 2.2
Note that glibc2.2 isn't a production series either (opposite of the
Linux kernel, glibc uses odd minor numbers for release and evens for
development), so anyone trusting such a system should contact RH for
support. Filling a system with devware is fun somedays, but with things
like gcc and glibc, it's seriously asking for trouble.
