Aha -- so if there's a SMTPD hanging around, it serves the connection
immediately.
Question: Why does it take so long for the smtpd to start up? What the
hell is Unixware waiting for?

Can you try this from another client? Connect with one client, wait for
the prompt, disconnect immediately. Then connect from another client.

BTW -- is your postfix running chrooted?
