You're not supposed to send mail to user
bare.ip.network.address.
That is not a valid email address.
If you want to send to a host by its IP address, the correct syntax
to use is:
user
[ip.network.address]
Sending mail to user
bare.ip.network.address just happens to work
as an artefact of implementation.
The artefact has to do with a workaround for "computer professionals"
that list IP addresses on the right-hand side of an MX record,
instead of listing a domain name as required by an RFC that was
written 15+ years ago.
However, I am not going to bend over backwards to make incorrect
address syntax such as user
bare.ip.network.address work everywhere
all the time.
