I suspect you are confusing two very different concepts - postfix has
had a "virtual" user table forever (a long time, anyway) - this allows
you to rewrite envelope recipient addresses while they are in transit
(unlike the alias map, while does roughly the same thing, but during
local delivery).
There is also a patch I wrote, that Wietse is in the process of
integrating, which is a "virtual" local delivery agent: a local
delivery agent for sites who's users are not in /etc/passwd, but in
some other type of map (maybe mysql, maybe libdb...).
