this sounds like a named service problem to me. make sure that your mail
machine is listed in your /etc/hosts file on the client machines....and vice
    versa.

Subject: Slow send from email client

    Hello All:

I am new to postfix and am having a problem with long
delays in sending mail from workstations on my LAN.
All email clients are Netscape Messenger. Postfix
runs on a Debian box (Pentium 133) on the same
segment. Volume is low 20 to 50 messages per day from
4 or 5 users. The Debian box shows negligible
utiliation (typically less than 2%). Few other
services run on it (ipchains, dhcp dns, that's about
it). No file, web or print serving, etc. When we
send email there is a long delay, commonly 60 to 90
seconds while the workstation says "Status:
Connecting; Contaction host [server name]" There are
occasions whe there is no delay but they do not occur
in a discernable patern. It does not matter if the
email destination is internal or not, nor does size
    seem to matter.

    Any thoughts?
