There is/was an issue of late with FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE when connecting
via ssh that SIGPIPE was set to SIG_IGN instead of SIG_DFL, causing
some programs not expecting this to fail with broken pipe
errors/warnings.
There is a big discussion about this in the freebsd-stable mailing
list the last week or so.
Try to connect to your server via telnet and start postfix, or just
reboot to start postfix. If the failures on the pipes go away, then
that's the problem. Otherwise, something else is to blame.
