    when mailer daemon tries to send to postmaster, it should go to
    postmasterexchange.versasys.com (according to definition in alias file).
    But instead, it attempts to deliver mail to postmasterversa9.versasys.com
    which is local. Mail bounced as a result.

    I try to do my homework before seeking help. And am perplex now. Please
    point me to a right direction. Thank you.

    That's incorrect syntax. The correct syntax in an alias file
    requires a : after the left-hand side.

    However, the above alias is never used, because your machine does
    not recognize postmasterversa9.versasys.com as a local destination.

    In order to have the alias expanded, specify

    /etc/postfix/main.cf:
        mydestination = $myhostname localhost.$mydomain

            Wietse
