How about sniffing?
tcpdump/ethereal?
I would actually recommend ethereal in this case, it has the ability
to follow streams, and a GUI frontend that makes it easy for a newbie.
http://zing.ethereal.net (IIRC, or as always google is your friend)
tcpdump should be available on your distribution CD (or a google search
should find it)
