It means that the authoritative DNS server doesn't know whether soft-gate.de
is an alias or not. So the query fails (instead of returning "Yes, it exists
and points to xxx" or "No, it doesn't exist"). I don't know exactly what
causes it since I've never had it happen to an DNS server under my control.

;-) But you should not suggest such things to someone who doesn't understand
the DNS and therefore doesn't know that doing so will _really_ f*ck things
up (like usa.net did overnight in fall 2000).
