    This one is not too difficult to explain. My guess is that the system
    where the mail is delivered doesn't know it's ldap users anymore,
    because the ldap server died. Therefore the mail bounces.

    Are you sure this is in the same ldap server? That's quite unlikely.
    Maybe it uses one of your slave ldap servers, maybe it doesn't need the
    ldap or it falls back to the default. I don't think it'll authenticate
    you against an ldap server which isn't running.. :)
