We have multiple domains, one of which has a server running Postfix Release
20010228 acting as the primary MX. The other domains have a proprietary
mail package, which is acting as the smtp server, MX record, etc.
There are more than a few issues with the proprietary server, one of which
is a lack of flexibility regarding aliases. For example, if a user changes
their name, because of marriage, divorce, etc, and wants to change their
email address, it causes issues.
What I would like to do is have the Postfix server configured as a backup
MX for this domain, while still acting as the Primary MX for the
other. Then, if a user would have their name/email address changed create
an alias on the Postfix server which matches the users old address and
points to the new address on the other server. The proprietary server
would have Postfix listed as a backup, and any address it didn't recognize
would get forwarded there. Postfix could then translate any aliases it
knows about to the new address, and send it back, while still delivering
any local mail to the local accounts.
1st, is this possible, and if so how can I tell Postfix which addresses in
which domains are local and which ones to forward back to the othe server ?
2nd, if this is not possible, are there better alternatives ?
For now we may not be able to have Postfix act as the Primary MX for the
other domain, but if we can make that change in the future would that
simplify things, taking into account there are multiple domains, and both
local and remote delivery for multiple domains ?
Thanks for any info.
