In case anyone is collecting these, or to help the next guy searching
the archives, here are some things things I found useful in setting up
Postfix for the first time:
1) Make it noisy. I found a number of small configuration problems, and
got a better feel for what was happening with my server, by looking
at the traffic generated by having the following in my main.cf:
notify_classes = 2bounce,bounce,delay,policy,protocol,resource,software
You'll almost certainly end up turning a few of these off, but by
then you'll know why you have them turned off.
2) Install pflogsumm and run it at least every hour (and read those
reports). Stuff that hides in the log file jumps right out at you
here.
3) When you think you have your main.cf the way you want it, do
"postconf | sort", then go and re-read the configuration manual and
sample files for each parameter, taking a look at what value you've
ended up with. I don't remember the details, but I know I was
surprised by at least one. Also, the exercise of looking at them in
alphabetical order rather then functional order helped make the
meaning "stick". The more important email is to you (and your
organization) the more important it is that you get this part right.
4) If things start getting confusing, go back and look at the big
picture. First the message goes through smtpd, then through cleanup,
etc.
5) No matter how careful you are, it is always the CEO's email that will
get hosed.
