That seems to be a popular approach. Use expensive equipment only
for the first delivery attempt, and use fallback_relay to send all
undeliverable mail to a queue on slower storage.
The only glitch is that currently the Postfix SMTP client does not
use fallback_relay when an SMTP session fails in the middle of a
delivery. Changing this is not a great deal but it requires moving
some code loops around.
