is there any way to make postfix try to look for a fqdn with 'hostname'?
the default for 'myhostname' seems to look for 'hostname', although on
our system, the fqdn is only given with hostname -f or hostname --fqdn.
sendmail seems to be able to figure this out ok - the machine's hostname
isn't specified in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and yet the correct hostname is
found.
alternatively is there a file you can use to specify this?
i realize that you can just set 'hostname = whatever' in main.cf, but
for this particular application that isn't possible (the same
configuration file must be automatically generated for a group of
machines and so can't contain machine-specific information).
