    I recommend IMP from Horde.org. They are about to release IMP 3.0 and I've
    been using the release candidates for a while, it rocks. Written in PHP, it
    uses IMAP to connect to the server. A robust back-end allows for storing of
    user preferences, addressbooks, etc. All the horde projects are tightly
    integrated, so for example you can play with Kronolith, the Horde web-based
    calendar.
