I very recently switched from Sendmail to Postfix (version 1.1.3) and
it has been running smoothly except for one simple problem: I'm unable
to get messages to arrive to Hotmail servers. I get the following
error:

    Feb 7 12:56:11 azul postfix/smtp[24805]: 0F46414A71: to=3D<pinguina_u=
hotmail.com>, relay=3DXX.hotmail.com[A.B.C.D], delay=3D43050, status=3Ddefe=
rred (lost connection with XX.hotmail.com[A.B.C.D] while sending HELO)

I know these are overloaded servers and I had run into similar
problems before (with Sendmail) but I can't get to understand this.

I have tried to connect to the failing servers' SMTP port manually.
Sometimes I get ECONNREFUSED but at other times I get to connect and I
get a normal message:

    220-HotMail (NO UCE) ESMTP server ready at Thu, 07 Feb 2002 10:43:34 -0=
800=20
    220 ESMTP spoken here

No matter how many times I try, I can't never get any different
behaviour from those servers: either they refuse the connection or
they send me the same initialization string. I have tried to send an
SMTP HELO command to the servers and I get a normal reply:

    250 Requested mail action okay, completed

Why is Postfix getting the "lost connection" error all the time?

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that Hotmail servers' initial
message has two 220 lines? Is that OK by the RFCs? Hmm. I guess I
should take some time to understand Postfix's src/smtp/smtp_proto.c
and related files. :/

I don't think the "What do you expect from Microsoft's crappy
servers!" argument (that I saw was giving to someone who asked a very
similar question in this list in (I think) Nov/2001) makes sense,
since I was able to manually send mail to them without problems (other
than having to try a few times to get one of the MX servers to accept
the connection).

Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I would really like to be able
to stay with Postfix. :)
