    I haven't had a chance to really fiddle with things, but just
    compiled 1.1.6 on test box running Solaris 8 using:

    $ gcc -v
    Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/3.0.3/specs
    Configured with: /usr/soft/that/gcc-3.0.3/src/orig/configure sparc-sun-solaris2.8 --enable-languages=c,c++,f77,objc --with-ld=/usr/local/bin/gld --with-as=/usr/local/bin/gas
    Thread model: posix
    gcc version 3.0.3

    I added Berkeley DB 4.0.14, pcre-3.4, and the iPlanet LDAP C SDK
    5.0. Didn't fiddle with optimization at all and left -g there. Oh,
    and none of this was compiled specifically for 64-bit.

    So far, not seeing any problems. Not sure why somebody was warning
    against gcc-3.0.{3,4}. I've got tons of software in production
    compiled with this and havent' seen any problems due to it so far.
    At this time none of it is specifically compiled for 64-bit.
