in fact, the real reason is that we have had continued
errors compiling SASL1, and we nor anyone on this or
the Cyrus-SASL list has been able to figure out what
the problem is. we have been hoping that SASL2 will
have no such problems (likely wishful thinking)

indeed. if we continue to face compile problems, we
might go the RPM way, but if not just for the excercise,
would like to give it a try manually.
