Then why does SMTP AUTH exist at all?

I keep hearing this, but no instructions as to how to do it.

    I don't have a "server", just a home PC.

    What is a/the "loopback interface"?

Well, I'd really like to know how to do this.

    No, it doesn't.

Sorry if I'm sounding a little edgy, but I keep geting conflicting
inputs and no step by step instruction for this ignorant, but trying to
learn newbie. I am reading the docs, but a lot of the terminology I
don't understand. Is it OK if I post really stupid questions to this
    list?
