In my original reading of the main.cf, I read this string,
and set: "myorigin = $mydomain", since I have the plan to
connect another Linux box I have with my new machine. I
could find nothing in the the text above that warns against
            this.

I have now commented out the above, and I am pleased to
report that 'root' and 'alan' can now communicate on my
new box. I am grateful to Mr Venema for providing this
            hint.

I have no such file. As I originally reported, I'm using
postfix because my Mandrake install set it up for me.

Again, I have no such file, and I searched the online documentation
pretty thoroughly. I also asked friends who use postfix about my
problem before I joined this E-list.

I thought I had described my original problem pretty carefully.

Anyway, I'm outta here. I'll stick with postfix for now, because it is
pretty much working. But I'll go back to qmail when I set up my home
"network"(two machines<g>). The qmail documentation is better, and --
can't believe I'm saying this! -- the people on the corresponding qmail
lists more helpful, and pleasanter, too.

Best wishes to all, and adieu,
