You may consider this logical. OTOH I still think it is not too
strange to look at it from another perspective. Some people who's
name shall not be spoken of right now made it clear that me, an
ordinary user, is stupid to think so.
Postfix is perfectly happy to create /var/mail/user when it does not
yet exist. It does so using superuser privileges if necessary. The
natural assumption is that the mail system takes care of the mail files.
(I know there's a difference between creating directories and files,
especially when it needs to be done safe, so no need to stress that
again)

And this is where the confusion starts. I do not consider
/var/mail/user to be a "homedir" (equivalent). I consider
".../user/..." to be part of the mail stuff. In my expectation
the MTA program takes care of the .../user part, this is probably
faulty but alas, I do not seem to be the only one. I even wonder
right now what would happen if /var/mail/user/ wasn't owned by user.
Yet another thing to try.
The docs can be made more helpful to newbies (like myself). That's
why they're there, not to be used as ammo for trigger happy sheriffs.
In order to improve the documentation and thus the product, the
most important thing to do is to cooperate with the users of that
documentation.
I must say that the kind of answers (as opposed to: kind answers)
do not attribute to the willingness to contribute. Don't take this
the wrong way, I think your answer is a good one. Thanks.
