I don't know if our situation is the same, but we have this kind of
problem in the past. No information could be get from the logs,
no ulimit related issues found. But, after we take the ethernet
card and replace it with a good one, the problem solved.
The only 'significant' information is the problem raise when
we start delivering our newsletter ('sudden' burst, delivering
to many destinations) -> the card start failing. Very.. very
broken card, I even can't get any information from 'dmesg'.
