Please respond to the list also. They may have time or responses that I do
    not.

The least recent snapshot that has SASL 2 support is the August one,
something like 1.1.11-22082002 or however the date format is ordered (I
can't look it up right now no browser).

What does a telnet session to port 25 look like after you type EHLO and a
    domain name? e.g.

    $ telnet localhost 25
    Trying 127.0.0.1..
    Connected to localhost.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 pcsimon.mtds.com ESMTP Postfix
    EHLO mtds.com
    250-pcsimon.mtds.com
    250-PIPELINING
    250-SIZE 10240000
    250-VRFY
    250-ETRN
    250-XVERP
    250 8BITMIME

You should see an additional AUTH message in there. If postfix crashes
before it even starts, it may be that it cannot find any SASL mechanisms,
but that you would see in the log file.
