Ok, that sounds good to me, but (maybe I'm too dub here) I can't find
that saslauthd on my machine. Isn't it part of the source package?

Use PAM. When you use Cyrus-SASL 1.5.28 with Postfix 1.1.11 or
Cyrus-SASL 2.1.7 with Postfix 1.1.11-20020822 it is working fine, even
if you chroot your Postfix daemons.

The key to success is saslauthd. Communication between
smtpd and saslauthd is implemented with a socket.

Saslauthd works with PAM or LDAP as backend for authentication data
    (username / password).

It is very important, for both versions of Cyrus-SASL, that
the mechanism plugins are available in /usr/lib/sasl !

    bye
