All of our virtual users have the same user and group ID of vmail, because
there is no reason for everyone to have their own ID's (and it's a pain to
maintain). When postfix hands the email to maildrop, it runs as the user
    vmail. Problem solved.

If you have assigned different UID's and GID's for all of your users,
then, I vaguely recall, you need to configure maildrop to be installed
with root privileges. In the maildrop configuration file, you need to
tell it where to look for the UID and GID for each user (for us, it's just
a default value for everyone). Then maildrop can su to those ID's before
delivering email. I am assuming that you have fields defined for the ID's
    in the database.
