Do not use CNAME owners (aliases) in MX (or NS) ResourceDATA field (Right
Hand Side):
owner.domain. MX 10 mx.fully.qualified.domain.
.. means that you cannot also do this:
mx.fully.qualified.domain. CNAME some.domain.

Simon, I know you know what you are talking about, but the DNS terms were a
little fuzzy. :))
