Thinking about it, it seems to point to DNS.
When asking us the question, you wrote this fragment:
"Connecting remotely to the SMTP port on the mail server results in the

telnet runlevel6.com 25
220 ns1.runlevel6.com ESMTP Postfix
500 Error: bad syntax"
So there must be some evidence of that in the log.
Is ns1.runlevel6.com that mailserver?
