It's probably worth noting that the Really Bad(tm) reputation of Microsoft
Exchange is cause in large part because it uses Access as the back-end
    message store.

We use courier-imap with Maildir boxes, and use some pretty simple scripts
to do things like search messages, extract all messages matching patterns
to a specified Maildir store, etc.

One could use glimpse or similar tools to index Maildir mail stores quite
easily if your main goal is to be able to search and retrieve messages
    efficiently.

Maildir has many advantages for the Unix hacker since it's easy to deal
with messages as files, and it's very robust. It's also easy to build
archival folders where messages are grouped by year, month, or similar
logical groupings, and these folders can be used to minimize problems with
huge numbers of files in individual directories.

``Ah, you know the type. They like to blame it all on the Jews or the Blacks, 'cause if they couldn't, they'd have to wake up to the fact that life's one big, scary, glorious, complex and ultimately unfathomable crapshoot -- and the only reason THEY can't seem to keep up is they're a bunch of misfits and losers.'' -- A analysis of Neo-Nazis, from "The Badger" comic
