Yes, it is possibile to automate download via cron, and updates are
provided quite soon. I used RAV for a while. I think it's a good product,
but is quite expansive for little domain. Now I have postfix+Trendmicro
viruswall (thanks to Ralf Hildebrandt for providing howtos) in a frontend
postfix. It's not so bad, but RAV would be a better solution.
