OT: SASL Symlink

Just trying to expand my understanding of *nix.

Both the Cyrus and Weitze documentation require a symlink as follows:

  ln -s /usr/local/lib/sasl2 /usr/lib/sasl2

That has the effect of putting a link "sasl2" in /usr/lib/sasl2 that
points to an empty directory usr/local/lib/sasl2.

What's the point (or do I have the symlink incorrect)?
