I always thought that MTAs would retry for a few hours - and they used to do.

I remember getting email notices from my ISP that the email could not be delivered for 3 hours it would keep trying for another 3. etc. I have not seen such a notice in a year or two... and have used several ISPs.

We have several clients which run their own corporate mail server - on a network connected to the net through adsl. When the adsl line is down, email bounces back pretty much immediately. Which to me indicates that sending MTAs don't retry if they cannot find a responsive MX for a domain. Maybe part of spam limitation/traffic volume control?
