This isn't a validation of the originating IP/hostname by the recipient,
then? I guess that would sort of make sense, because if the recipient
were trying to validate that IP, I would receive no notice about it.

Well, what I was getting at is this: putting CNAMEs in my external zone
fixed the problem with MTAs verifying my hostname via forward DNS, but
should I expect any MTAs to do reverse DNS verification? The PTR
records would not resolve to my internal network (192.168.4.0) but
rather to an IP in the block that my ISP assigns.
