Personally I still would rather risk using BIND-8 as a cache-only server
than anything else.
Primarily that's because of the very mature diagnostic and debugging
support in BIND-8. It tracks the source of all cached RRs (and writes
those as comments in the cache dump) and had tremendous logging and
tracing facilities. Not even BIND-9 can do such wonderful things yet.
Note I try to never mix authoritative services and caching services on
the same nameserver, especially not with BIND-8.
