We have also had some (three) customer reports of Outlook Express locking
up on certain messages, and have also traced it to some kind of plugin
people are using rather than Outlook Express itself. We haven't gotten as
far as tracking the exact program, but it may well be the same Norton
anti-spam filter (thanks for posting that info, Carl -- that'll be handy
for more testing).
Unfortunately, I have tested it enough to know that it is locking up when
the mail contains even trivial 8 bit characters (including a single NULL
character anywhere in the message) even if the mail is correctly flagged
as 8-bit MIME, so I don't think it can be rejected by body checks :-(
