Behind a firewall

I believe that electronic mail is one truly arcane niche of activity, one at which I have had no success in even coming close to mastering. I subscribed to this list because I want to figure out how to do email from my machine---either at home, with an ISP over a dialup, or from work, behind an extremely paranoid (yet almost masterfully inept) firewall. I want my machine to be, in effect (at least at my limited level of understanding) as an SMTP server, THROUGH the ISP.
This ISP is very paranoid also, but for good cause: the ISP will not allow what they refer to as "Relay" email, because of the danger of spam.
Question 1. What's a relay?
I did set up sendmail or exim or some other email server system to send email out from behind the firewall, using sylpheed or emacs or other methods like mailx. It worked, but for one issue: to anyone on the ISP's domain wouldn't workk, because my machine was using my ISP's domain name as the "visible mail name".
Question 2: How do you set this up so that I can send mail off the machien to someone at the same ISP as my "visible mail name"?
That will do for starters, but for one more issue:
Where can I find a truly cogent discussion of all of this. I mean, email being arcane and all, and I can read and write ok, but when I see these messages on this list they are gibberish. I want to find a short document that will clearly explicate the entire process of email.

(I have to have two emails, because I can't send email through the ISP server from behind the superparanoio firewall at the school where I work. This has to go, but I don't need to get a PhD in email administratino, I hope, to get it to work properly.
I use nmh and mh-e and sylpheed.
