I give up. Your insistence on your own interpretation without
considering the possibility of ambiguity in a non-formal language
like English is disheartening. This is not C or Java. It's
English and you can't take "instead of" totally out of the
context in which it appeared, assign it a formal definition,
and expect everyone else who reads it to guess what you meant.
It can take shades of meaning depending on context. English
is not a context-free language. Read rogerk's posting on this
thread.
