I've spent hours w/ a non-working postfix - sasl setup. I tried
recompling everything at least twice.

I keep getting an entry in the logfile like:
Jul 21 10:16:39 smapbane postfix/smtpd[7859]: SQL engine 'mysql^M' not
supported

I glossed over the ^M, assiming it was some bad logging code until I
realized it was inside the quotes.
Sure enough the smtpd.conf was in DOS format not UNIX.
I changed it and sasl works!
