So the logging stops exactly right when you run mailstat, not at 4 am, not
when the disk is full, but exactly when you run mailstat.
Here is what I conclude:
Syslog opens the log file when it starts up, and it opens it up with write
access.
maillog is using something at the OS level to grab write access to the log.
Syslog no longer has the valid (current) handle to write to the log any more
either you are using maillog improperly (check your command line options
carefully) or maillog is running foul, check your source, check for bug
fixes, etc..
