I presume that is because the smtpd doesn't actually try map expansion
for various reasons. My issue is simpler - a sanity check to work around
existing flaws in getpwnam() interfaces. Using unix: rather than nis:,
as Victor has suggested, would lead to even earlier failure.

I'm wondering if local(8) would accept -o soft_bounce=yes in master.cf
as a stopgap measure.
