Did it work before? Doing what? Were you sending mail through it?
Typical home users don't need an MTA like Postfix, except perhaps for
things like messages from the local cron daemon. MUA's (mail user
agents) like kmail and evolution use SMTP to send through the ISP's
server, and retrieve mail using POP3/IMAP.

I bet your distributor installed the documentation somewhere. Try
looking in /usr/share/doc/postfix-$VERSION.

Typical desktop GNU/Linux installs do not install everything you will
need in order to compile things.

But why? What is it you are wanting here? I'm not trying to dissuade
you, because I learned what little I know mostly from playing at home,
but I can't see what your goal is. Do you have your own domain name,
and want to set yourself up to accept the mail for it?

Well, most home IP addresses are listed in dynamic IP real-time block
lists (RBL's.) Most major MX's will refuse to take mail from such IP's.
That situation is getting worse. Even I use one of the dynamic IP
RBL's, despite the fact that I once was a victim of them.

Even if you do want to send through your own home MTA, you should set
it up to relay through the ISP's server outbound.

You should check everything in BASIC_CONFIGURATION_README.html (that
file is probably on your system, and if not, it's at postfix.org.) But
there again, it all depends on what you want to do with this.

In addition to BASIC_CONFIGURATION_README, set your ISP's relay as
relayhost.

"localhost.localdomain" is what Red Hat and heirs and successors use as
default system hostname. What did you expect to see here?
