It's not that CLI is not end-user friendly, mutt isn't. Pine is a much
more friendly command-line MUA. And you also have elm which is very
similar to mutt. When I was a student at the University of Michigan
(95-00) pine was your standard-issued, end-user MUA and it was CLI. I
think most students are using webmail now, but U of M still supports
pine.
