I've written a patch to make Postfix communicate via Dovecot
authentication process:

I'm willing to make pretty much whatever changes needed to get it
accepted (although I have little time nowadays so might take a while).

The patch or the used authentication protocol isn't in any way specific
to Dovecot, so it should be pretty simple to implement another
authentication daemon. Postfix could perhaps include a simple PAM-based
daemon and for more demanding purposes a Cyrus SASL based daemon. And
Dovecot users could use dovecot-auth without patching :)
