Mike,
It is considered bad practice to "hijack a thread", that is, to start a
new conversation by replying to an unrelated message.
some people use a threaded view of messages, so
- if they don't consider the thread as interesting/.../, they will just
skip it, and thus skip your message (they won't even notice it)
- if they are focusing on the thread, they will skip any message that is
irrelevant to that thread
- they can get angry because of hijacking and won't be open to help
also, this creates a problem for the archives (where it is generally
desirable to view message threads in a coherent way).
