For a test setup, the best bet is to make a real subdomain of a real
domain. As an alternative you could use a non-existent TLD. My personal
standard for internal DNS is sitename.lan.

The search line should be domain names, not an IP address. "man 5
resolver". You want the internal DNS as your only "nameserver
ip.add.re.ss" line. (Assuming that said nameserver is capable of
resolving real names, of course.)

Depends on your /etc/nsswitch.conf and libraries, might vary by OS.
