using IP addresses. if everything works, then it is a dns problem.
otherwise, it is either a Firewalling problem (either an explicit rule
or a system implementing the "string model" which forbids connecting to
an IP from the "wrong" interface), a routing problem, or an application
level problem (if db.grids.cn resolves to 10.1.2.3 internally, he must
have postfix listening on this IP or use NAT/redirection...). in short,
there are too many possibilities...
